Look out for scammers
The Union County Sheriff’s Office posted on their Facebook page that citizens have been contacted by scammers claiming to be from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and even using deputies’ names. The scammers are claiming that there are warrants out for the recipients of the calls and bonds/fines that need to be paid.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office stated, “We will never call you and request money over the phone. Please remember not to give out personal information or send money or gift cards to people over the phone.”

11 churches holding joint Thanksgiving Eve Services
Eleven churches in the area – St. Thomas Episcopal, Faith United Presbyterian, Grace United Methodist, Augustana Lutheran, First Lutheran of South Sioux City, First Lutheran of Sioux
City, Trinity Lutheran, St. John Lutheran, St. Luke Lutheran, St. Mark Lutheran and United Lutheran – will share Thanksgiving Eve Worship at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at First Lutheran Church, 3939 Cheyenne Blvd. The community is invited to attend. A combined choir, under the direction of Diana Wooley, will rehearse at 6 p.m. All are invited to sing. Pie will be served following worship.
SD Humanities Commission sponsoring Brainstorming: The Human Condition on Nov. 30
The South Dakota Humanities Commission (SDHC), in cooperation with longtime SDHC scholar and educator, Lawrence Diggs, has developed a program to unite people during divisive times through genuine conversation.
Brainstorming: The Human Connection is a weekly discussion series led by Diggs with a focus on forging human relationships. This program is inspired by the guiding question, “How can we remove the invisible barriers that lead to misunderstandings and even tragedy?”
Aberdeen Chief of Police Dave McNeil joins Diggs on Thursday, Nov. 30 to reflect on the factors that necessitate the construction of new jails.
Audience participation is encouraged. Please note that meetings are recorded – If you would prefer not to be on the recording, you can attend and listen with your video and/or microphone turned off, or participate via Facebook. Previously recorded videos are available on Facebook and YouTube.

North Sioux City to have Holiday Parade of Lights

North Sioux City will have a Holiday Parade of Lights on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. The parade will start at the intersection of Wildflower Bend and Campbell Street and go east on Campbell Street towards the police station (118 S. Victor). After the parade, people are invited to gather for cookies and hot cocoa with Santa at the police station garage.

Indian Art of the Northern Plains exhibit is now open

An exhibit opened in November in honor of Native American Heritage Month at the Sioux City Public Museum. Titled “Indian Art of the Northern Plains”, the exhibit features late 19th and early 20th-century artwork from the Ogallala Sioux, Yankton Sioux, Mandan, Wind River Shoshone, Shoshone and Kiowa tribes. The exhibit opened Nov. 18 and runs through Sunday, March 3, 2024.
The Sioux City Public Museum is located at 607 4th St. in downtown Sioux City.
Coming up at the North Sioux City Public Library
The public library is a place where lots of interesting things happen for people of a variety of ages. The North Sioux City Community Library has more than books, they have things like classes, art exhibits, storytimes for preschoolers, book clubs, meeting rooms for community organizations and more.

Lego Builders: Mon., Nov. 27, 4 p.m. — Learning legos with challenging builds and cooperative learning.
Preschool Storytime: Wed., Nov. 29, 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. — A time filled with early childhood development interaction through book reading and creative activity.
Preschool Storytime: Thurs., 30, 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. — A time filled with early childhood development interaction through book reading and creative activity.
Preschool Storytime: Wed., Dec. 6, 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. — A time filled with early childhood development interaction through book reading and creative activity.
Adult Craft Night: Thurs., Dec. 7, – 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. — A fun time of crafting with friends. Call the library to reserve a spot. Unless otherwise indicated 15 people will be the limit.
Beginner Lego: Tues., Dec. 12, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. — Create a good Lego building foundation with this beginner class. Emphasis is put on structure and technique.
Adult Book Club: Tues., Dec. 12, 6:00 p.m. — If you love books and love sharing come to our book club. Anyone is welcome. You do not have to be an NSC library patron to attend.
Lutefisk and meatball dinner in Elk Point
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elk Point will host a lutefisk and meatball dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 (in case of inclement weather, the dinner will be held on Dec. 11). The church is located at 31903 475th Ave. Holiday baked goods will be available.
All proceeds benefit the St. Paul Restoration Fund and Community Missions/Charities. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids 4 to 12 years old. Kids 3 years old and under are free. For tickets, visit the Lewis Drug in Elk Point or find the event link on Facebook.
Learn coping strategies for dealing with grief
GriefShare During the Holidays is the name of a presentation that will be held at the host church Calvary Lutheran, 4400 Central St on Monday, Dec. 4. Presentations will be held at two different times: 10:30 a.m. to noon and 6:30 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to join this 1.5-hour presentation that is filled with coping strategies for dealing with the loss of a loved one at Christmas.

Siouxland Cookbooks and Local Recipes on display at Sioux City Public Library
What’s the best part of the upcoming holidays? FOOD! Stop by the newest local history display: Siouxland Cookbooks and Local Recipes to rediscover an old favorite like Charlie Boys and hot mulled cider made with Sue Bee Honey, or find inspiration to try something new. The display is located on the second floor of the Aalfs Downtown Library on 529 Pierce Street.

Curated by Local History Librarian Specialist, Sarah Enright, this display aims to help Sioux Cityans discover how to create local favorites in time for the holidays.
“The Sioux City Public Library’s local history collection contains a wide variety of cookbooks compiled from local businesses and agencies,” Enright said. “The new local history display showcases some of Sioux City’s famous favorites and contributions from trusty family recipes. You can find everything from appetizers to soups, to cookies. I created this display to inspire folks to rediscover an old favorite or start a new family tradition, because….who doesn’t love food?”
One recipe Enright recommends is the classic Charlie Boy:
Charlie Boys Recipe:
5 lbs. ground beef 1/8 cup black pepper
¼ cup mustard ¼ cup fresh horseradish
½ cup ketchup 1 cup water
1 cup chopped onion Buns & cheese slices for serving
Brown ground beef and drain. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns with a slice of cheese.
