Interstate 29 construction projects to start this month in Union County

Drivers on Interstate 29 will begin to experience lane closures, temporary speed limit reductions and other delays starting this month according to a press release from the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT).

On Monday, March 11, bridge work is scheduled to begin on the 300th Street bridge overpass on Interstate 29 two miles south of Beresford. The project will include Interstate median crossover construction, approach grading, and structure replacement for the structure located at 300th Street over I-29. Lane closures, with temporary speed limit reductions, will be used to move traffic through the work zone on I-29. Motorists can expect delays during these times.

For this reconstruction project, 300th Street will be closed. During the closure, motorists will be directed to the signed detour route on Greenfield Road, 302nd Street, and 471st Avenue. Access to residences and property adjacent to the construction project will be maintained for local traffic.

The overall project completion date is June 2025. The contractor on the $6.6 million project is Journey Group Companies of Sioux Falls, SD.

On Monday, March 18, bridge work is scheduled to begin on Interstate 29 at exit 18 near Elk Point. This project includes approach pavement repair, bridge deck replacement, bridge deck chip seal, and berm protection at the structures located on I-29 at exit 18 and the Interstate railroad bridges located just north of exit 18. Lane closures, with temporary speed limit reductions, will be used to move traffic through the work zones. Motorists can expect delays during these times.

This work is part of another project that will take place later this summer on the overpass at exit one near Dakota Dunes.

The contractor on the $4.5 million project is Journey Group Companies of Sioux Falls, SD. The overall project completion date is Nov. 1, 2024.
