03-14-2024 03:37 PM

• A caller reported a stray pig and dog on a rural road near Meckling. The owner of the animals was notified and the problem was resolved. A deputy checked and found the animals were no longer loose in the area.

• Four inmates were transported from the Clay County Jail to the Union County Jail.

• Four inmates were transported from the Union County Jail to the Clay County Jail to attend court.

• A deputy responded to a report of a dog at a rural residence biting a bicyclist on the road near the residence.

• An inmate was transported from the Clay County Jail to the Minnehaha County Jail and a second inmate was transported from there back to the Clay County Jail.

• The School Resource Officer investigated a report of a high school student in Vermillion having possession of a vape device in school. The student was cited for the offense and received school discipline.

• A deputy assisted Vermillion police officers with a death investigation at a Vermillion residence.

• A deputy responded to a request to check on the status of a woman with a child in a stroller near a Vermillion business. The woman and child were located and were not in need of any assistance.

• A deputy investigated a crash involving a car striking a dog on Highway 50 near Meckling.

• A deputy responded to a report of a smoke alarm at an Irene business. There was no fire located and the smoke appeared to be from cooking.

• The school resource officer investigated a report of habitually truant students living in Irene. Charges against the parents of the children for failing to send the children to school are under consideration by the Office of the State’s Attorney.

• An inmate was transported to a medical appointment in Vermillion and was then transported to the Union County Jail. A second inmate was transported from the Union County Jail to the Clay County Jail to be processed for release.

• The School Resource Officer investigated a report of a habitually truant high school student in Vermillion. The student was cited for truancy.

• A deputy assisted a Vermillion police officer at the scene of a dispute in a Vermillion residence.

• A deputy assisted Vermillion police officers with a burglary investigation at a Vermillion residence.

• A deputy investigated a report of someone shooting a rifle on a rural road. The suspects were gone upon arrival but bullet casings were located.

• The school resource officer investigated a report of a habitually truant student in Vermillion. Charges are under consideration against the child’s parents for failing to send the child to school.

• A caller reported plans to have a controlled burn at a rural residence. He was informed the county is under a Red Flag Warning and burning was banned at the time but he had already lit the fire. A deputy responded and found that the landowner was working to put the fire out. He was informed of the county burning ordinance for future reference.

• A person was transported from the Clay County Jail to a Sioux Falls hospital for an involuntary mental health commitment.

• Deputies responded along with fire units to two ditch fires near Wakonda that appeared to have been set deliberately as a form of vandalism which resulted in a damaged mailbox. The matter is under investigation.

• An inmate was transported from the Yankton County Jail to the Clay County Jail.

• A deputy responded along with a GFP Conservation Officer and freed a deer caught in a fence near Burbank.

• A deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding near Hub City on University Road. The driver had a suspended driver’s license and had substituted another vehicle’s license plates on the car he was driving. The car was towed and the driver was arrested for multiple offenses.

• A caller reported suspicious activity involving two people in a car on a dead-end rural road. A deputy responded and found the people and observed no criminal activity.

• A deputy observed an erratic driver in Vermillion and stopped the car to investigate. The driver was found not to be impaired but was not driving safely due to health issues. The car was parked and the driver was transported to her residence.

• A deputy transported a grand jury witness from her residence to testify and then returned her to her home.

• The School Resource Officer responded along with EMS to a medical emergency involving a staff member at the high school in Vermillion.

• A deputy assisted National Park Rangers with an investigation involving a person being in possession of drugs and paraphernalia as well as being in violation of National Park ordinances. The deputy cited the offender for the drug offenses and the Park Rangers continued their investigation.

• A deputy assisted Vermillion police officers with crowd control during an investigation into a fight outside a downtown bar in Vermillion.

• A vehicle was stopped in Irene and the driver was informed he would need to repair his windshield due to it being broken and unsafely impairing the driver’s vision.

• A deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding near Wakonda. The driver was found to have a revoked driver’s license and a warrant for his arrest from Yankton County. The man was cited for the traffic offenses and was arrested for the Yankton County warrant.

• A deputy responded to a rural residence after a clinic reported concerns about a person who had left after reporting a mental health crisis. The person was found and it was determined that no immediate intervention was necessary.

• After being brought from the prison in Sioux Falls for a court appearance in Clay County, an inmate was returned to the State Penitentiary. A second inmate was then transported from the Minnehaha County Jail to the Clay County Jail.

• While providing courtroom security, a deputy became aware of a person in court who was wanted in Turner County. The warrant was confirmed and the person was arrested.

• A deputy responded to a report of a vehicle left on a rural resident’s property. The deputy learned the vehicle had mechanical issues and the owner intended to remove it promptly.

• A deputy responded to a vacant rural residence after the property owner reported a suspicion that someone had been squatting in the house. There was an indication that someone had been there at some time in the past but no one was currently residing in the structure.

• A vehicle was stopped for speeding on Main Street in Irene and the driver was found to be uninsured. The driver was cited.

• A deputy was nearby and responded to a report of a fire in a trash can near a Vermillion residence. The fire was extinguished with water.

• A deputy responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch along a rural gravel road. The car was undamaged and was pulled out by a tow truck.

• A person was transported from the hospital in Vermillion to a Sioux Falls Hospital to be held for an involuntary mental health commitment.

• A vehicle was stopped on 306th Street and the driver was notified of a non-functioning headlight. The driver was found to have a suspended driver’s license and expired license plates and was cited for those offenses.

• A deputy responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a rural residence. The unattended vehicle was located and the owner was contacted but no apparent crime had been committed.
