The Dakota Valley Board of Education convened for its regular meeting on February 10, at the Dakota Valley Board Room, where several decisions were made, including approval of an updated student Wellness Policy.

Chairperson Steve Kistner called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM, with all board members present, including Hanson, Nilges, Norby, and Thompson. Following the approval of the consent agenda, the board turned its attention to the Wellness Policy, introduced by Bennett Jensen.

The revised Wellness Policy 5052 aims to enhance the school environment by promoting healthy food choices and physical activity among students. The policy outlines specific goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities to promote student wellness. Key elements include:

  • Encouraging healthy food and beverage choices in school meal programs.
  • Providing water access throughout the school day.
  • Incorporating nutrition and wellness education into the classroom curriculum.
  • Collaborating with public and private entities to support student wellness.

Other policy discussions included a review of Policy 5054 on student bullying, which defines bullying according to South Dakota state law and CDC guidelines. The board reiterated its commitment to addressing and preventing bullying in schools. Additionally, Policy 5056 on student free expression was reviewed, balancing student rights with maintaining an orderly educational environment. The board unanimously approved the policy revision. The Wellness Policy is available to the public on the school district’s web site in the Policy Book.

Dr. Tonia Warzecha, the district’s superintendent, also recognized the upcoming School Board Recognition Week, scheduled for February 17-21, acknowledging board members’ contributions to the education community.

In addition to the policy updates, the board addressed staffing changes, approving several resignations and new hires. Notable resignations included Erik Krenz, the high school head volleyball coach. New staff members welcomed into the district included Steven Cross as the high school assistant track coach, Yvon Fitch as the upper elementary/middle school counselor for the 2025-26 school year, and Brian Valerio as an evening custodian.

In other business, the board elected Matt Thompson as the new Vice-Chair to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Dooley’s resignation. Jesica Hanson was appointed as the board representative on the sick bank committee, also due to Dooley’s departure.

The board approved a quote from American Fence Company to replace the playground fence at the upper elementary/middle school for $44,395.26, funded by a Homeland Security Grant. They also approved the purchase of Chromebooks for the 2025-26 school year from RTI for $163,416.00.

A legislative update was presented by Dr. Warzecha, who provided insights into ongoing educational reforms and initiatives. The board also reviewed a restoration plan for the elementary land washout, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining safe and functional school facilities. Persons interested in seeing the district’s washout plan can contact Dr. Warzecha’s office at (605) 422-3800 or email her at  Tonia.Warzecha@k12.sd.us

Following the public session, the board entered an executive session for personnel matters, lasting about one hour. Upon reconvening, the board approved the renewal of administrator contracts for the upcoming school year. Those approved were Kristi Maloney, Niki Herzog, Ben Blaeser, Erik Sommervold, Jeff Hamm, Bill Clements, Linda Steele, Michael Oberg, Jill Sponder and Dr. Tonia Warzecha.

The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 8:18 p.m., after addressing various expenditures across different funds, including a total of $261,734.03 from the General Fund and $63,544.48 from the Capital Outlay Fund.
