Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) Recipients Announced by Transportation Commission

Union County in South Dakota has received grants for four bridge projects as part of the Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) program. The grants, totaling approximately $1.8 million, aim to enhance critical transportation assets. Each year, $15 million is made available for BIG projects, and to date, $165 million in funds have been awarded. Three-vehicle accident near Kingsley sends two to hospital in serious condition

A three-vehicle accident involving an SUV, a pickup, and a semi-truck occurred in Woodbury County. The SUV failed to yield at a stop sign, resulting in a collision. The SUV driver and passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital, while no other injuries were reported. Emergency personnel responded to the scene. Local driver is a slow learner

Despite warnings about water-covered roadways and “Road Closed” signs in the Siouxland area, a man chose to disregard them and drove around the barriers, getting his car stuck in floodwaters. Onlookers laughed as he attempted to fix the car, but two women eventually helped him before leaving. The incident emphasized the importance of heeding safety warnings. Semi overturns at Jefferson on-ramp Tuesday afternoon

A semi-truck carrying snacks overturned after the driver turned too wide onto an on-ramp, sliding into tall grass and tipping over. The driver was uninjured but expressed concern about the lack of warning signs for the steep hill and tall grass. Three wreckers were needed to pull the rig back onto the ramp, closing traffic for several hours. The Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Motor vehicle accident Monday leads to arrest for drug offenses

On Monday, March 18 at 3:52 p.m., The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Sioux County Road A54B, 14 miles northwest of Rock Valley, IA.

Sharon Kerschion, age 71, from Hudson, SD, was driving a 2002 Buick Century northbound on A54 when a 38-year-old male passenger, who was experiencing a mental health condition, distracted her by grabbing the steering wheel. Kerschion lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch where the vehicle came to rest on railroad tracks.

Fatal crash Saturday near Gayville

A 45-year-old man died Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Yankton County.

The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

According to a press release from the SD Department of Public Safety, preliminary crash information indicates a Ford van was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of SD Highway 50 near Gayville. Snow emergencies declared in North Sioux City and Sioux City

The National Weather Service is placed our area under a winter storm warning effective at midnight tonight. In anticipation of the storm, some Siouxland communities are declaring snow emergencies.

Bypass meeting draws plenty of interest from area residents and landowners

A public meeting sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), City of North Sioux City and Stockwell Engineers of Sioux Falls drew lots of interest Monday night at the North Sioux City Fire Hall. At least 85 southern Union County residents and landowners attended the meeting to get information on the project that will construct a new road that will bypass Northshore Drive by McCook Lake.

People were able to talk one-on-one to engineers from Stockwell Engineers as well as consulting engineers from Felsburg, Holt & Ullevig who are specialists in transportation planning, and WSB, another engineering firm consulting on the project.
