Smithfield’s $2 million child labor penalty dwarfed by parent company’s annual $26 billion in sales

Smithfield will pay a $2 million penalty for child labor violations at its Minnesota plant, marking the state’s largest enforcement action. An investigation revealed that 11 minors worked hazardous jobs during late hours. ‘Next time I’ll give you a black eye:’ Homes cited for abuse, sexual exploitation

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing found abuse at Good Samaritan Home in Holstein and Living Center West in Des Moines. The Living Center West failed to prevent the sexual exploitation of a resident, while the Good Samaritan Home’s video footage showed a CNA abusing a resident with dementia. They’re in the jailhouse now

As of July 15, 2024, the Siouxland County Jails in SE South Dakota house various individuals. The Clay County Jail contains detailed inmate information due to cooperation from the Sheriff’s Offices. The Union County Jail holds several individuals, with bond information included. The Lincoln County Jail also has numerous individuals with varied charges and bonds. Reynolds, Congress members protest federal child labor law enforcement

Union County Court: 3/11 – 3/22/24

Following are two weeks worth of cases that have been disposed in the Union County courts. They include everything from traffic to trucking/transportation to criminal cases.

Included is a guide to one case that looks on the surface as if it has a high number of charges. But everything is not always as it appears at first glance.

Nurse criminally charged in death of care facility resident

A nurse who allegedly failed to suction the airway of a U.S. Army veteran in an Iowa nursing home has been criminally charged in the man’s death.

Becky Sue Manning, 69, of Lake View, is charged with felony wanton neglect of a healthcare facility resident. According to prosecutors, Manning, a licensed practical nurse, refused repeated requests to provide physician-ordered care for a resident of the Fonda Specialty Care nursing home while working there in 2023 as an employee of the GrapeTree Medical Staffing temp agency.

Union County Court: March 4-8, 2024

You may have noticed we’ve been neglecting to post the Union County Court Report on this site. I’m sorry for the lack of courtroom activity news on my part.

It could have been because I’ve been serving time in jail and haven’t had access to a computer in the hoosgow . . . but it’s not.

I just haven’t taken the time to transfer the information that Shannon Steckelberg, the Union County Deputy Clerk Magistrate works so hard to compile and send to me each week. My gosh, I’m having a shame attack just thinking about my lack of follow-through.
