The western Iowa man suspected of sexually assaulting an Iowa nursing home resident was the subject of a prior police complaint that “fell off the radar” without being pursued by authorities, according to police officials. The home’s parent company, Care Initiatives of West Des Moines, continued to provide work for the man in other Iowa nursing homes that it operates, inspectors found.

Federal judge hears arguments in lawsuit challenging Iowa book law

A U.S. District Court judge heard oral arguments Friday about whether to stop enforcement of measures in an Iowa education law that ban certain books with sexual content from K-12 school libraries.

The lawsuit challenges sections of Senate File 496 that require schools to remove books with depictions of sex acts. It also challenges a provision requiring schools to inform parents if a student requests the use of a different name or pronouns than what they were assigned at birth. The lawsuit claims those and other measures violate Iowa students’ constitutional rights to equal protection, free speech, free association and due process, the lawsuit claims. So, a few years ago this week . . .

Welcome to a new feature of The Siouxland Observer. It’s sort of like your hometown newspaper’s “Peeking in the Past” column — only different.

Of course, since they’ve been clipped just as they were printed, none have been edited to spare you the mirth or fear of what it was like back then. These may or may not be in any particular order. Higgledy-Piggledy, if you will. Sort of like the editor’s brain. Continue reading So, a few years ago this week . . .

Siouxland Observed #6: Where do you go with a flat tire? (Where is this sign?)

I said this edition of Siouxland Observed wouldn’t be too difficult. And it shouldn’t be if you pay attention while driving through the area just west of Sioux City’s downtown. The only thing more specific I can tell you is the sign can be seen from a short distance from the street you drive as you travel on your merry way to bowling leagues or go out for some Vietnamese food. I’d like the name of the business that this particular sign refers to, please. I’ll put the answer and the name(s) of those answering correctly in an upcoming edition … Continue reading Siouxland Observed #6: Where do you go with a flat tire? (Where is this sign?)
