Former state employee pleads not guilty in $1.8 million theft case

Lonna Carroll, a former employee of the South Dakota Department of Social Services, pleaded not guilty to stealing $1.8 million in state and federal funds over 13 years. She faces two felony counts of aggravated grand theft and could be sentenced to 40 years in prison. The state lawmakers plan to hold a hearing on the alleged theft. South Dakota cities cap video lottery as state eyes betting increase

South Dakota keeps adding video lottery machines, with 567 more terminals and over $1.17 billion gambled this year, earning a record-setting $163 million in revenue for the state.

As the games continue their sprawl and the Legislature weighs an increase in betting limits, some South Dakota communities are trying to figure out a middle-of-the-road solution for the future of the 34-year-old games.
