Is it possible to get an activity report like this specific to north Sioux City?
Thanks for your comment, Ralph. I have asked the Union County Sheriff’s office to provide more detailed information that what is in their current report and have been told that is the extent of what we are going to get. The North Sioux City Police Department will not provide any information more detailed than the Sheriff’s office either, so I haven’t bothered to publish it. The reason I publish the Clay County and Lincoln County law enforcement reports is that 1. People are interested in those county’s agencies’ activities and 2. I want readers of this page to see what more transparent law enforcement agency activity reports look like and can encourage our Union County/North Sioux City law enforcement agencies to be more open with their reports. I can continue to encourage the sheriff’s office and police department to provide more specific information on their activity reports, but it helps if more citizens ask for them to provide additional information as well.
I have asked for that twice from the reporter for the north sioux times and was told they already do that, I got the feeling that that was all we were going to get. As a north Sioux City taxpayer, I want to know the specifics of what is happening in my community, the where why and what. I referenced the clay county and vermillion reports in The Plain Talk so she knew exactly what I was looking for. I told her I thought that info was not being provided as the local department didn’t want to be accountable and let out any more information than they had to, a way of controlling what we knew. Ralph Webb
I tend to agree with you, Ralph. They can provide the Sheriff’s Office can provide the information if they want to. The North Sioux City Times isn’t willing to put pressure on the law enforcement officials to provide more information. Heck, they don’t even attend local government meetings and instead write their stories from the meeting minutes. I plan to meet with the new sheriff to ask again about getting more information about the department’s activities.
As a resident of north sioux, IWould like to know what’s happening in the community, even the bad stuff so I know if I need to take action to protect myself, not because I am a busybody. I thought talking to the city administrator might have some hope, but not sure, previous meetings I have had with him are hot and cold. Ralph Webb
Not sure what to tell you about talking to Eric, the City Administrator. I suppose it depends on the topic and how you approach him. I’ve mostly found him to be pretty helpful and willing to explain things to me as a newcomer to the workings of North Sioux City government. I’m sure he can get defensive about certain things regarding the city, as anyone in his position might. I don’t know where he stands on the law enforcement activity reports as we’ve never discussed them. I have talked about them with Chief of Police/County Commissioner Rich Headid and he’s been reluctant to release more information. His argument has been pretty irrational, in my opinion, that somehow I’ll put in too many details about their calls (e.g. the name of a person, their address, etc.). That would definitely not happen as they would still be able to control the amount of information released through their software program, which I understand is the same one that Clay County uses.
My experience with both of the gentlemen has been consistent with your response. I had getten pretty involved a few years ago in trying to get fireworks banned from residential neighborhoods as I got nowhere, mostly with the city council. While they appeared sympathetic to my cause, it became apparent to me that nothing was going to be done. I have had conversations with the city administrator and police chief over time about various issues and found the city administrator to occasionally be open to listening but the police chief plays things pretty close to the vest and is not very open to sharing or changing procedures. I am glad to hear that you are broaching this subject with them. Ralph Webb
